Planning information for Bowie homeowners. Your equipment and property need an individual assessment.
A heat pump moves heat
In heating mode, an air-source heat pump transfers heat from outside into the home. Many models can operate below freezing, but their output and efficiency depend on the equipment and conditions. A broad promise about all heat pumps is less useful than the proposed model’s performance data.
Match capacity to the home
Ask how much heat the home needs at local winter design conditions and how much the proposed unit can supply at that temperature. Insulation, air leakage, and duct condition affect the result. The system selection should reflect the building rather than a rule based only on square footage.
Understand supplemental heat
Some installations use electric resistance or another heat source when needed. Ask when it operates, how controls are configured, and what assumptions were used in any operating-cost comparison. Costs depend on the house, equipment, weather, and energy prices.
Observe before assuming a fault
Longer run times can be normal for variable-capacity equipment. Outdoor defrost can also be normal. A home that cannot maintain comfort, recurring error codes, or persistent ice should prompt a service inquiry. Report what you see without opening electrical panels or trying refrigerant work.
Compare the complete proposal
Record the indoor and outdoor model numbers, rated cold-weather capacity, backup configuration, installation scope, and warranty terms. Ask how the system will be commissioned and how to use the thermostat. Confirm any current incentive directly with its administrator before including it in a budget.
